What affected the people most bitterly was the consciousness of the fact that the whole system was shielded from the people, whereby the slow extirpation of traditional values seemed in some way to be more or less sanctioned by the Government itself. The hypocrisy of the system, which endeavored outwardly to make the people believe that the fundamental values were still in place, increased the feeling of hatred against the Government and at the same time aroused a spirit of rebellion and contempt.
